Sheriff Joseph O’Donoghue, also known as “Tokyo Joe,” took office in January 2024. He brings over 45 years of law enforcement experience to the role. His career began in Atlantic City, and he has also served with the Hamilton and Mullica Township Police Departments.
Sheriff O’Donoghue continued his law enforcement career and eventually retired from the Atlantic County Sheriff’s Office. He then made history by becoming the first from the ranks, to be elected as Sheriff of Atlantic County.
Throughout his career, Sheriff O’Donoghue has received numerous accommodations, including the Medal of Valor, the Combat Cross, and the Life-Saving Award.
In addition to his law enforcement career, he served for two years as a councilman for Egg Harbor Township and has achieved success as a real estate investor.
Sheriff O’Donoghue is also a devoted family man, proud to be the father of twelve children, five of whom have followed him into law enforcement. He has 29 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
