The mission of the Atlantic County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Unit is to promote traffic safety through education and enforcement. The Traffic Unit works with Citizens and other branches of City, County and State Government to identify problematic areas that create traffic hazards. While investigating these areas the Traffic Unit may resort to decreasing the hazard by Public Education, recommend engineering changes to the area, or strict enforcement.
The Traffic Unit is not just responsible for enforcing traffic laws; the unit’s responsibilities include investigating vehicle related accidents, including Traffic Homicide Investigations, along with DWI (driving while intoxicated) checkpoints aimed at deterring impaired drivers, and vehicle safety checkpoints. The Traffic Unit also utilizes various forms of speed measuring devices to identify and apprehend all other of traffic violations. Officers in the Traffic Unit enforce all of the traffic laws with particular emphasis on speeding in school zones, pedestrian violations, speeding and right of way. They concentrate on specific problem areas within the county where there are high incidents of violations or accidents occurring. The unit has initiated or participated in a number of programs intended to prevent accidents and make the streets safer including the "Click It or Ticket program” and “Aggressive Driving Program”.
